Housekeeping Executive of the Year
2013 VRHP Housekeeping Executive of the Year
Michele Barlow with Emerald Isle Realty is our 2013 VRHP Housekeeping Executive of the Year! She received the award at our National Conference in New Orleans! Michele is the Director of Housekeeping at Emerald Isle Realty on Emerald Isle in North Carolina. Over 26 years ago, she was introduced to the vacation rental industry by being responsible for checking beach cottages, after the departing guest was required to clean, to make sure that they were ready for the next arriving guests. Michele was the owner/operator of her own cleaning service for over ten years! In 1991, feeling the call to make a change, Michele enrolled in Coastal Carolina Community College and earned an Associate Degree in Computer Technology. Upon graduating, she quickly secured a position within the Onslow County School system working in the central office. After 5 years of working in the school system, the call for cleaning residential homes, offices, new construction and beach cottages came knocking. To be happy, she answered the call. Due to medical reasons, cleaning was not an option and she was offered the position of Housekeeping Manager at another vacation rental company on Emerald Isle. In 2003, Michele was offered a front line position at Emerald Isle Realty in the Maintenance Department. Michele has been a member of VRHP since 2000 and was promoted to Director of Housekeeping in 2006 with Emerald Isle Realty. She also serves on the advisory panel for Pro Resort Housekeeping. Michele lives on Emerald Isle with her cat Mufasa. She enjoys spending time with her children Keith and Heidi, sunning on the beach, boating, biking, traveling and cooking.
Stewart Couch Memorial Award
Presented At The 2012 National Conference in Las Vegas
VRHP lost a dear friend and colleague in the spring of 2012.
After learning of the loss of this admired and respected person, the Outer Banks Association of Realtors established the Stewart Couch Memorial Scholarship fund for Hatteras Island seniors seeking higher education.
In recognition of Stewart’s standards, commitment, and contribution to the professionalism of vacation rental housekeeping the VRHP board of directors voted to create the Stewart Couch Memorial Award.
This award will donate $1,000 to the Outer Banks Association of Realtors Stewart Couch scholarship fund every three years in the name of a member company who holds the professionalism of housekeeping in the highest regard, supports continuing education, and fosters innovation to “raise the bar” for professional housekeeping in the vacation rental industry.
The first annual award was proudly presented, posthumously, to Stewart Couch himself and to Hatteras Realty at our national conference in October, 2012.
Amy Helle, president of Hatteras Realty, accepted the award on behalf of Stewart Couch and Hatteras Realty.
